Who Was Angela Lansbury?

Born on October 16, 1925 in London, England, Angela Lansbury was known for her acting in films, on television and on Broadway.

She moved to the United States in 1940 and was signed to MGM, where she appeared in Gaslight and The Picture Of Dorian Gray, for which she received two Academy Award nominations.

She has appeared in countless productions over the years but is perhaps best known for her role as Jessica Fletcher on the television series Murder, She Wrote.

In addition to his role on Murder, She Wrote, Lansbury also served as executive producer for 88 episodes.

In 1971, she starred in the live-action animated musical film Bedknobs And Broomsticks before appearing in several Agatha Christie film adaptations, including as Miss Marple in The Mirror Crack’d.

Lansbury voiced Mrs. Potts in the 1991 animated version of Beauty and the Beast and Dowager Empress Marie in Anastasia (1997).

She also had a notable career on stage, winning four Tony Awards for various roles including Mame Dennis in 1966’s Mame and Mrs Lovett in 1979’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

In 2022 she received her fifth Tony for lifetime achievement.

In her 90s, she starred as Aunt March in the television adaptation of Little Women and voiced Mayor McGerkle in The Grinch.

Lansbury last appeared on screen in 2018 in Mary Poppins Returns and Buttons, A New Musical Film.

Lansbury was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014.

Lansbury has walked down the aisle twice over the years, but she hasn’t been married since 2003.

She first married American actor Richard Cromwell in 1945, but the two separated the following year.

Lansbury married English actor and producer Peter Shaw in 1949.

The two were married until his death in 2003.

During her second marriage, she had two children, son Anthony Pullen, 70, and daughter Deidre Angela, 69.
