One of the most iconic teams in NBA history, the LA Lakers are synonymous with basketball success.
The NBA franchise has seen numerous changes of ownership over the years — but who owns it now?
Who owns the LA Lakers?
The Los Angeles Lakers are owned by a consortium of business moguls, with ownership interests divided among a number of individuals and trusts.
Buss Family Trusts
When the team’s legendary former owner, Jerry Buss, passed away in 2014, he still owned a 66% majority stake in the Lakers.
When he died, Jerry passed ownership of the team equally to his six children, 11% each.
His daughter Jeanie is currently team governor and representative at NBA board meetings.
Although he no longer holds an interest in the team, Philip Anschutz was a key stakeholder.
The billionaire owns or controls companies in a variety of industries, including energy, railroads, real estate, sports, newspapers, films, theater, arenas and music.
In July 2021, it was announced that the world’s leading sports ownership company AEG had acquired Anschutz’s 27 per cent stake in the company.
That left the minority stake in the hands of Dodgers bosses Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, who also owns Chelsea Football Club.
Edward P Roski
In addition to his co-ownership of the Lakers, Roski is President and CEO of Majestic Realty Co.
He owns more than 83 million square feet of real estate across the United States and was ranked #115 on the Forbes 400 in 2021.
Patrick Soon-Shiong is known for much more than his billionaire status and ownership of several iconic companies including the Lakers.
He is also a distinguished transplant surgeon and was the inventor of the drug Abraxane, which became well known for its use against lung, breast and pancreatic cancer.
He bought a 4.5% stake in NBA legend Magic Johnson’s basketball team and also owns the Los Angeles Times.
Who is LA Lakers President Jeanie Buss?
Jeanie is the daughter of former owner Jerry Buss.
She became the Lakers’ governor in 2014 after the death of her father and is now the team’s representative on the NBA Board of Governors.
Despite some setbacks in the years since she took office, Jeanie Buss is still the undisputed leader of the franchise with just one NBA championship win in 2020.
