DIY millionaire Willie Wilson donated $200k in gas bills to residents of Chicago, Illinois.
The donation has resulted in hour-long traffic jams with cars lining up at 5am to benefit from free gas such as the price is increasing.
Who is Willie Wilson?
Willie Wilson’s success was built on hard work, perseverance and a desire to give back to those less fortunate.
He comes from a humble upbringing and has worked hard alongside his parents, who share.
Ever since he was a boy, Wilson has been plowing the fields with a mule. “The mule’s name is Charlie,” Wilson told the Chicago Tribue.
“He’s a hard worker. He plows the fields and pulls the cart. He pulls water from the well.
“Everybody works, the whole family, works in the fields, works hard, wakes up in the morning, works hard, day in and day out. There are hard-working people in Chicago who understand me. .”
Wilson started working as a local custodian McDonald’s in 1970 with only 2 dollars an hour but worked, he rose to the position of supervisor.
Five years after the entrepreneur-turned-director started at McDonald’s, he took an opportunity and asked the founder, Ray Krocabout opening his own McDonald’s.
Kroc agreed, and in 1979 Wilson was given a struggling McDonald’s and managed to turn it into a successful business within a year.
Wilson later founded Gemini Electronics and Omar Medical Materials, one of the fastest growing international medical supply companies in the US, in 1997.
What has Willie Wilson donated?
Wilson used his fortune to raise thousands of dollars for Chicago community over the years.
His donations have ranged from a $300k donation to a local church in 2018 to a $200k donation to provide free gasoline to Chicagoans on May 17th. 3 year 2022.
In Covid-19 During the pandemic, Wilson paid residents’ property taxes, out-of-pocket the homeless, and donated 10k medical masks and 1,000 N-95 masks to Chicago police and the fire department.
Wilson’s aspirations expand to run for office government positions including mayor and president but he was unsuccessful.
When running for mayor in 2015, Wilson said in an interview with Kass & Cohn on WLS-AM, “Someone asked me the other day if I would get a salary (if elected.) Yes, I would. received, but I gave it to churches
“I just want to help people because I come from a poor family. Eleven sisters and brothers, who have been through life, ups and downs,” he told the Chicago Tribune.
“And I don’t forget (where) I came from. I just feel like everyone needs to be respected, all citizens.”
What is he doing about gas prices?
Philanthropist Willie Wilson donated $200,000 in free gas to ten Chicago gas stations on March 17.
Free gas at some stations was offered at 7am until the money ran out and caused traffic jams with cars queuing up at 5am.
Two gas station owners, Khalil Abdullah and Amin Ibrahim, told WGN9 News that they had lowered the price of gas for the day so more people could benefit from Wilson’s charitable donation.
“Gasoline prices soar Wilson told the news station that it’s been hard on so many of our citizens.
“The average price of conventional gas has increased by more than $4 a gallon for the first time in nearly 14 years and is now up nearly 50 percent from last year.”
He added, “The war in Ukraine, the ban on Russian oil and high taxes are all contributing to fuel prices.”
