There will be a familiar face in the middle during the World Cup.
Clement Turpin referees Brazil’s round of 16 game against South Korea.
The French whistler is a highly experienced referee and was in charge of the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid last season.
Who is Clemens Turpin?
Turpin is one of the most experienced whistlers heading into this summer’s tournament.
The Frenchman started in the National League in 2006 and took just two years to reach Ligue 1 and the top tier of the domestic rankings.
In 2010 he received Fifa list status, which means he was able to expand to Europe.
Since then he has won the 2014 and 2018 World Cup qualifiers and was a midfielder at Euro 2016 in his home country.
You might recognize Turpin from last year’s Europa League final in Gdansk, where he was ably assisted by Jerome Brisard and Benjamin Pages.
The two assistants have been working with the Frenchman for years.
Ahead of the 2021 game between Manchester United and Villarreal, he said: “I’m very proud.
“Not only for me, but also for my assistants who have accompanied me for many years and for all referees in France.
“I never said to myself that one day I would referee a European final.
“Right from the start, I preferred to set myself small goals and challenges along the way.
“I’ve never had a specific role model as a referee, but I’ve observed other referees and incorporated small bits of what they do into my own refereeing.”
