Who is John Cannan?

Cold Cases investigators named Cannan the prime suspect in the 2002 murder of Lamplugh.

But the Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Cannan, now 68, who has already been convicted and imprisoned for a range of crimes.

John Cannan is currently being held at Full Sutton Prison in East Yorkshire for the 1987 murder of another woman, the newly married Shirley Banks.

In 1989 he was convicted of rape, attempted kidnapping, murder and attempted robbery following a series of crimes against young professional women.

The night before Banks was murdered, Cannan had tried to kidnap a woman. He was also found to have raped a third with a knife point in Reading, Berkshire a year earlier.

He was sentenced to three life sentences for the crimes, and although he originally received a life sentence, this was later reduced to a minimum sentence of 35 years.

He had since tried to challenge the mandatory 35 years, which was denied.

In November 2002, Cold Cases investigators named him as a prime suspect after the CPS rejected their attempt to indict him, believing there was insufficient evidence to indict him.

Cannan maintains his innocence.

A fellow prisoner came forward after the naming, claiming that Lamplugh was buried under the patio of Cannan’s mother’s home.

Police returned to the property in 2018 to dig up part of the garden after receiving information that Cannan may have buried 25-year-old Suzy there after kidnapping and murdering her.

Detectives believe Cannan may have driven to his mother’s then-home after the alleged murder.

But there were other clues that suggested Cannan was Mr. Kipper long before that clue.

A key one was that he was nicknamed “Kipper” by others at a bond hostel where he was living at the time of the murder – due to his fondness for the fish and habit of having a “kip”.

Cannan’s 35-year sentence ends in October 2022, and he will face a parole board in 2021 to try to secure a move to an open prison.

If successful, he could be reinstated into the community in about 18 months.

What happened to Suzy Lamplugh?

Lamplugh disappeared in 1986 after leaving her office to meet a client named “Mr. Kipper” and showing him two houses in Fulham.

She did not return to work after the appointment and was never seen again.

Over the decades, police have followed up a number of leads linked to the disappearance, but have continued to pull loopholes.

The 25-year-old was pronounced dead in 1994, presumably murdered.

Are there other suspects in the Suzy Lamplugh case?

Another suspect in the Suzy Lamplugh case is serial killer Steven Wright – also known as the Suffolk Strangler and Ipswich Ripper.

Lamplugh had worked as a beautician on the Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner in 1982. Steven Wright worked there at the same time as a steward.

Wright is a convicted serial killer who murdered five women in 2006.

Prior to his arrest, his only criminal activity was theft, which identified his DNA in connection with the murders.

He was addicted to gambling and in debt.

Wright had a history of depression. In 2008, his half-brother Keith revealed that he had attempted suicide twice.

Wright’s father, Conrad Wright, told the Mirror he was “disturbed” by pictures of Steven Wright with real estate agent Suzy before she disappeared in 1986.

In July 2021, Wright was arrested in prison on suspicion of killing Victoria Hall, who was found naked in a ditch in 1999.

Suzy’s brother Richard spoke up at the time and asked the police to pursue his sister’s case.

He told The Sunday Mirror: “I see no reason why the police couldn’t speak to Wright about Suzy’s murder.

“You’re trying to solve another case and you’re probably focused on this one.

“But if Wright was linked, if the police thought it was relevant, then it would be worth it.

“Whether it’s Cannan or Wright, I don’t know. What’s difficult is not knowing where she is.

“It would be nice to find her. To have a place where we could scatter their ashes.”

The Metropolitan Police investigated Wright in 2008 in connection with Lamplugh’s disappearance.

However, a senior Metropolitan Police officer described the connection as “speculative”.
