Sir Graham Brady is the chairman of the 1922 committee, which plays a crucial role in the confidence vote process.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Tory MP for Altrincham and Sale West.
Who is Sir Graham Brady?
Sir Graham was born in Salford, Lancashire on 20 May 1967 and attended Durham University before being elected to the seat of Altrincham and Sale West in 1997.
He resigned as shadow minister for Europe in 2007 in protest at David Cameron’s stance on high schools.
He was a supporter of Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum and has been the 1922 leader for over a decade.
He is married and has two adult children.
When did Sir Graham Brady become Chairman of the 1922 Committee?
Sir Graham has chaired the 1922 Committee since 2010.
The Tory Committee gives backbench Conservative MPs the opportunity to air their concerns, report on constituency work and coordinate legislative agendas.
Members meet weekly while Parliament is in session and play an important role in electing the party leader.
They also have the power to bring down whoever is in charge.
What role does Sir Graham Brady play in a no-confidence vote?
Conservative MPs who want to remove their leader can do so by calling a vote of confidence in their leadership.
According to party regulations, a vote is triggered when 15 percent of Conservative MPs present the 1922 committee chairman with a letter of no confidence.
Only the leader – currently Sir Graham – knows how many letters have been tabled, although some MPs choose to go public with their decision to table one.
Once the threshold is reached, Sir Graham announces that the required number has been received and that a vote of confidence will take place.
The secret vote is then decided with a simple majority.
On 12 December 2018, Sir Graham Brady announced then Prime Minister Theresa May would face a vote after crossing the threshold.
May survived despite a third of MPs voting against her, although she resigned five months later on May 24, 2019.
