CHARITY employee Shirley Raines has been named CNN’s Hero of the Year.
Here’s everything you need to know about the beauty and why she was awarded the prestigious award.
Who is Shirley Raines?
Shirley Raines is the founder of Beauty 2 the Streetz – a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles.
The outdoor beauty salon, open since 2015, provides food, clothing, hair and makeup services to thousands of homeless people in the Skid Row district.
She has also provided rape whistles, tents, sleeping bags, hygiene items, and partnered with local health officials to provide a range of essential services.
Raines is said to be running a pop up shop for the first time with a small group of family and friends in the area – admitting that she “never wants to leave”.
“It (Skid Row) is a place where people have great hearts, but no one can see it,” she said. CNN.
“The make-up or hairdo for them is not so much, it’s also the physical touch.”
“People need physical touch.”
Raines then started live-streaming her events and posting photos on Instagram, as she gained a larger following from professionals across the city.
CNN reports that hairstylists, barbers, licensed makeup artists, and even major makeup companies have turned to Raines to offer their services.
Then, during the pandemic, she was responsible for delivering packed lunches to the homeless and – in tandem with the health department – providing masks, disinfectants and other personal protective equipment.
As of 2021, she is expected to deliver food and supplies twice a week and expand partnerships with local corporations.
Why was she named Hero of the Year by CNN?
Raines was awarded CNN’s Hero of the Year on Sunday, December 12, 2021, and will receive $100,000 to expand his work.
It comes after online voters chose her as the front-runner from CNN’s Top 10 Heroes for this year’s finalists.
Receiving the award on Sunday, Raines thanked her children, including her late son, who she says inspired her work.
“This is certainly not easy. I stand in front of you a very broken woman,” Raines said.
“I’m a mother without a son and there are a lot of people on the street without a mother – and I feel it’s a fair exchange.”
“My sun has not appeared in 30 years. That is worth tomorrow 30 years before I see the end.
“I would be lying if I said I was always perfectly happy doing this. It doesn’t take away the pain of my son dying.
“But I definitely got better. I can say his name now. He is the reason I do what I do. “
