Who is Robert Neulander and where is he now?

Robert Neulander, 70, is a former gynecologist from Syracuse, New York who was convicted of murdering his wife.

Before the case, Neulander was one of the most respected gynecologists in the area and was often praised by peers.

Despite the reputation, he was arrested for murder shortly after Leslie’s death and found guilty in 2015, but the verdict was thrown out after jury misconduct was discovered, according to CNY Central.

Neulander was then tried again in March 2022, found guilty again and sentenced to 20 years of life imprisonment.

What happened to Robert Neulander’s wife?

On the morning of September 17, 2012, Neulander came home from a jog and reportedly found his wife on the bathroom shower floor.

Her daughter, Jenna Neulander, quickly called 911 for help, but by the time paramedics arrived, it was too late.

Originally, Leslie’s death was ruled an accident resulting from a slip and fall in the shower, but after further investigation, the former Onondaga County coroner reversed his decision to homicide.

According to former DeWitt police sergeant Scott Kapral, Leslie’s body was found in the bedroom rather than the bathroom upon arrival at the crime scene, prompting early suspicion.

“The expectations are that she’s going to be in the shower or right before the shower,” Kapral said during an interview with 48 Hours via CBS News.

“I go into the actual bedroom,” Kapral continued, “… and then I catch all the blood.

“My radar is going off — as far as saying, ‘We’ve got to answer why — why all this blood is here.'”

At the time, prosecutors argued that Neulander assaulted his wife and that this was the cause of her death, and a jury ultimately agreed.

A new piece of evidence was introduced during the second trial, which was collected in 2021 and helped further support the prosecution’s case.

According to CNY Central, police found a piece of Leslie’s head on the headboard at the Neulanders’ home, and it was determined to be a piece of “mummified fatty tissue”.

After DNA matched the tissue to Leslie, prosecutors argued that it was even better evidence that she wasn’t injured in the shower.
