Who is Pat Summerall?
Born on May 10, 1930, Summerall is a Florida native speakers started playing sports at a young age.
While attending Columbia High School in Lake City, Summerall played soccer, tennis, baseball, and basketball.
The multi-talented athlete was later inducted into the Florida High School Athletes Association Hall of Fame and the All-American Team.
From 1949 to 1951, Summerall played college football for the University Arkansas Razorbacks.
He graduated in 1953, with a major in Russian history.
Summerall was the 4th round pick in 1952 NFL Draft, joined the Detroit Lions to play pre-season before breaking his arm.
From 1958 to 1961, Summerall participated in New York Giants.
His radio career began in 1962 with CBS, where he was hired as a commentator for the NFL network.
Beginning in 1981, Summerall and John Madden became a historic broadcast team – working together for more than 20 seasons.
What was the cause of his death?
In the 1990s, Summerall began to have problems with his health.
He was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer, before receiving a liver transplant in 2004.
Four years later, Summerall had hip replacement surgery.
In 2013, Summerall visited a hospital in Dallas, Texas, to have hip fracture surgery. He died of cardiac arrest on April 16, 2013.
Summerall was 82 years old at the time of his death.
After his death, The late John Madden thanked his partner.
“Pat was my broadcast partner for a long time, but more than that he was my friend all these years,” Madden said at the time.
“We’ve never had an argument, and it’s because of Pat. He’s a great broadcaster and a great man. He always has a joke.
“Pat has never complained and we have never had an unhappy moment. He is something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be.”
What happened to John Madden?
On December 28, 2021, John Madden died suddenly at the age of 85.
The exact cause of death of the legendary football coach and broadcaster is still unknown.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell paid tribute to Madden, writing: “On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families.
“We all know him as an Oakland Raiders Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster who’s worked for every major network, but most of all, he’s a husband, who devoted father and grandfather.
“No one loves football more than the Coach,” the statement continued.
“He’s football. He’s an incredible sounding board for me and so many others.”
