Who is Noel Smith?

Noel “Razor” Smith, born December 24, 1960, is a British writer and former criminal.

Raised in London, Noel had his first encounter with the police at the age of 14.

In that first encounter, Smith was on trial for a series of burglaries that he claimed he did not commit.

The charges were dropped, but in his own words, Smith “threw himself into crime”.

At the age of 16 Smith appeared at the Old Bailey accused of armed robbery and possession of firearms – he was sentenced to 3 years.

After his first stint in prison, Smith continued a life of crime and committed non-stop armed robberies – but the consequences of his actions soon caught up with him.

How long was Noel Smith in prison?

Noel Smith spent most of his adult life in prison after being charged with 58 separate convictions over a period of 33 years.

Looking back on his life, Smith said, “I was a juvenile delinquent in the mid-1970s and became an adult prisoner in the 1980s and beyond.”

Smith’s shortest sentence resulted in him serving 7 days in a cell for criminal damage.

His longest sentence was life after being found guilty of bank robbery and possession of firearms.

In 1992, Noel escaped from the prison he was being held in and was on the run for 72 days.

During this time on the run, he robbed 14 other banks and became known as the “town gentleman robber” for robbing banks in a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase.

He was recaptured in 1993 and subsequently received 14 concurrent prison sentences – leaving him with 10 years in prison.

His last conviction came in 1999 – after nearly a decade and over 200 robberies.

During his final stretch inside, Smith decided enough was enough and that he needed to change his lifestyle.

While serving his time, Noel said he taught himself to read and write and found refuge in books.

He also holds a Diploma from the London School of Journalism and a Law Degree.

Upon his release in 2010, Noel walked out of the prison gates and has not been in trouble with the law since.

What is Noel Smith doing now?

Noel is now a bestselling author and has published a number of his books.

These include his autobiography, A Few Kind Words and a Loaded Gun, and his latest book, A Rusty Gun.

He has also received a number of Koestler awards for his writing and has contributed to the Independent, Guardian, Punch, The Big Issue, New Statesman and New Law Journal.

Since his return to society, Noel has also been telling school children his story of a “brutal” criminal justice system to keep them from committing crimes.

In 2021, it was reported that Noel was the Associate Editor of Inside Time – the country’s only newspaper devoted to the lives of prisoners.
