Sasse met his wife, Melissa McLeod Sasse, while in college, and the two have been married since 1995.

Who is Melissa, wife of Senator Ben Sasse?

Melissa is from Birmingham, Alabama. She comes from a military family and was born at an air force base in California.

While living in New Haven, Connecticut, Melissa worked as a high school teacher and careers counselor. During this time, Sasse was working on his doctorate in American history.

Melissa holds degrees from the University of Alabama and Georgia Mason University.

In 2007, at the age of 37, Melissa experienced a major health crisis after suffering from a brain aneurysm. Within six months, Melissa had made a tremendous recovery.

Melissa is still teaching, but at home, a much smaller class – her children.

How many children do they have?

Melissa and Sasse have three children. They have two daughters and a son – Elizabeth, Alexandra and Breck.

The children usually live in Fremont, Nebraska but often travel to Washington, DC when Congress is in session.

Since the family is constantly traveling, Melissa homeschools her children.

Who is Ben Sasse?

Ben Sasse was born on February 22, 1972 in Plainview, Nebraska.

He is a politician and academic administrator and a member of the Republican Party.

Prior Ben was Assistant Secretary of State for Health and Human Services for Planning and Assessment from 2007 to 2009.

He then became 15th President of Midland University from 2010 to 2014.

Ben ran for a vacant US Senate seat in 2014, where he defeated Democratic nominee David Domina.

In 2020 he was re-elected for a second term.

He is expected to step down later in 2022 to take up a new position as President of the University of Florida.

On October 6, 2022, Rahul Patel, chair of the university’s Presidential Search Committee, stated in an announcement, “This is right for the University of Florida, right for the state of Florida, and right for the Sasse family.

“Ben brings intellectual curiosity, a belief in the power and potential of American universities, and an unmatched track record of leadership in higher education, government and the private sector.”
