DIE inmate and former teacher Linda Carty announced she was accused of murdering 25-year-old Joana Rodriguez.
Linda Carty, 63, has always maintained her innocence while appealing the death sentence by lethal injection.
Who is Linda Carty?
Once an elementary school teacher, Linda Carty immigrated to USA in 1982.
She was born in St. Kitts on October 5, 1958, was a British colony at the time, meaning she had British citizenship.
In the early 90s, Carty was convicted of car theft and posing as an FBI agent.
Carty was sentenced to 10 years of probation for her crimes, on the condition that she work as a drug informant.
In February 2002, she was sentenced to death for the murder of 25-year-old Joana Rodriguez.
She has remained a death row inmate in Texas ever since, appealing her case multiple times.
Why was Linda Carty executed?
On May 16, 2001, Joana Rodriguez and her three-day-old baby were abducted from their home.
She was placed in the trunk of a car, bound with duct tape and wrapped in a plastic bag over her head.
Rodriguez died of suffocation while her child was placed in another vehicle and survived.
The other two victims were beaten, had their milk ducts cut and left at home.
Carty became a suspect because she told everyone she was going to have a baby, even though it didn’t appear to be pregnant.
When police spoke to Carty, her rental car and her daughter’s car may have been used to commit the crime and direct them to the vehicles, her fingerprints were found on both vehicles. .
They put her under house arrest, and during the trial, evidence was heard that she had told her husband she was expecting after they separated.
She told her husband on May 15 that she would give birth the next day but told another she gave birth on the same day.
She recorded several phone calls to co-conspirator Gerald Anderson between 1.09 a.m. and 1.14 a.m.
Carty claimed that she had committed no crime and was accused by three co-accused men of working as a drug informant.
When will Linda Carty be done?
Currently, Carty is still waiting for the execution date and has filed numerous appeals against the sentence.
She was found guilty of murder on February 19, 2002 and then sentenced to death a few days later by lethal injection.
Carty is the only British citizen currently on death row and, if executed, would be the first female British citizen to be executed since 1955.
An automatic appeal was made but denied by Texas Criminal Appeals Court in 2004.
Carty then appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and then the Supreme Court of the United States, where the British Government submitted an amicus curiae summary.
An amicus brief in U.S. law means that an outside party can offer relevant alternative views on a legal case.
The British government believes that the US has breached its international law obligations by not notifying UK consular officials of her arrest until the trial is over.
She has appeared in many documentaries, most recently her speaking to Susanna Reid in British Grandma on Death Row, which airs Tuesday, 22 March 2022 on ITV at 9pm.
