His first professional theatrical role was in the 1985 film adaptation of Huckleberry Finn in Chicago.
His television work includes appearances on shows such as: Daybreak, Law & OrderNew Twilight Zone, Equalizer, Stepford Kids and more.
In 1992, Mitchell came out as gay in a New York Times profile.
In 1996, he became a cast member of the Fox sitcom, Party Girl.
Mitchell is also known for creating the musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which earned him a Tony Award to best revive a musical.
He won Best Director at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
Mitchell has also directed, Shortbus and How to Talk to Girls at Party.
