What did Jeffrey Toobin do?
During a Zoom call on October 15, 2020, Toobin, 62, was caught masturbating.
The meeting was about a presidential election podcast for WNYC and The New Yorker.
Toobin allegedly angled the computer camera, touched himself and blew kisses at someone who was not among his colleagues, his colleagues said.
Shortly after the incident, Toobin apologized in a statement, saying: “I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake in believing I was off camera.
“I apologize to my wife, family, friends and colleagues.”
New Yorker editor David Remnick issued a statement to staff regarding the incident, saying: “As you may have read in various news reports today, one of our writers, Jeff Toobin, was arrested following an incident at suspended from a Zoom call last week.
“Please rest assured that we take such matters seriously and are investigating. Best regards, David.”
Shortly thereafter, the author was fired from the New Yorker after 27 years.
Toobin, was not fired from his CNN job as senior legal analyst, but was on leave until June 10, 2021 – a source revealed at the time that he was “too good to fire.”
What has Jeffrey Toobin said since the incident?
Eight months after the scandal, Toobin returned to his CNN role as Senior Legal Analyst.
Speaking to CNN’s Alisyn Camerota, he said he apologized to his colleagues and worked to improve and make amends.
“I feel sorry for the people who read my work and saw me on CNN and thought I was a better person than that.
“You know, I have a lot of rebuilding to do, but I feel very privileged and very fortunate that I can try to do that,” he said.
“I’m trying to become the kind of person that people can trust again,” he continued.
As part of his self-rehabilitation, Toobin mentioned therapy and community service like working at a panel to better help and to humble himself.
However, Toobin announced on Twitter on August 12, 2022 that he was leaving CNN permanently.
His tweet specified: “Friends I have decided that I am leaving @cnn after 20 years after my vacation. Was great to spend my last day on the air with my friends Wolf, Anderson and Don.
“I love all my former colleagues. Watch out for my next book about the Oklahoma City bombing, coming in 2023 by @simonandschuster.”
