WALES begins their Six Nations title defense against Ireland in Dublin.
And there is a lot of experience in the midfield when Jaco Peyper has been selected as the referee.
But with that experience has been controversial throughout his long career.
Who is Jaco Peyper?
Jaco Peyper was born in 1980 in Bloemfontein.
In 2008, he made his Super Rugby debut in his early 20s, before making his international debut on Scotland’s 2012 Oceania tour.
Peyper was in charge of Scotland’s 9-6 win over Australia, a 37-25 win over Fiji and a 17-16 win over Tonga.
He was selected to start in both the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.
Outside of rugby, he is a trained lawyer and he and his wife Zenobia have two children together.
Why is Jaco Peyper controversial?
Jaco Peyper sparked controversy during another Wales match, the 2019 Rugby World Cup final against France.
Peyper kicked out Sebastien Vahaamahina from France for a brutal elbow-kick on Aaron Wainwright.
However, after the game, he was pictured laughing with the Wales fans as he performed the elbow strike.
As a result, World Rugby opened an investigation and decided not to pick Peyper for the rest of the tournament, labeling the move “inappropriate”.
Before Ireland vs Wales, Wales captain Dan Biggar joked that Peyper would have sleepless nights thinking about refereeing him and Ireland captain Johnny Sextion on fire.
He said: “In the first game, Jaco Peyper had him and me, so I bet he’s having sleepless nights!
“(Seriously) it will be a challenge because by nature I am very fiery and competitive. It is like a double-edged sword.
For me, as a player, I need to be at a level where I have emotions but obviously have boundaries.
“I’m really looking forward to trying my hand at it. Only time will tell if it’s on the right track but I’ll fly into it as best I can. ”
