From 1997 to 2009 he was National President of the Australian Christian Churches.
Houston comes from a family of pastors as his parents joined the Assemblies of God in New Zealand and began leading a church nearby.
In 1997 he was elected President of the Assemblies of God in Australia.

Why did Brian Houston resign from Hillsong Church?
On Wednesday, March 23, 2022, the church announced the resignation of the pastor after he was accused of “indiscretions” towards two women.
The church’s acting senior pastor, Phil Dooley, said in a statement, “We would like to inform you that Pastor Brian Houston has resigned as global senior pastor of Hillsong Church and the board has accepted his resignation.”

The first incident involved the pastor entering a women’s hotel room after drinking alcohol during a conference in 2019.
“The truth is we don’t know what happened next,” Phil Dooley, the pastor who replaced Houston, told Australian news media in a leaked video.
“The woman did not say there was any sexual activity. Brian has said there was no sexual activity but he was in the room for 40 minutes.”
The second incident involved Houston sending “inappropriate” text messages to another woman, the church said.

On May 18, 2023, Houston announced on Instagram that he would be “talking through” some topics raised by FX’s The Secrets of Hillsong.
“I’m going to do an Instagram Live and just talk about some of these things,” he said called.
“Documentaries and my take on them and of course the leaked documents and all the consequences that come with it. And some of the statements from the Hillsong church keep saying that we are a different church now and cast shadows on the past. … God bless.” . Loving You.”
