ECCENTRIC economist Heather Morgan has reportedly been arrested along with her partner Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein for money laundering.
The 31-year-old rapper, who calls herself the “Crocodile of Wall Street,” was arrested on February 8, 2022.
Who is Heather Morgan?
Heather Morgan, who goes by the stage name Razzlekhan, is a part-time rapper and Forbes contributor who previously ran an email marketing company.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations from the University of California and a master’s degree in economics of international development from the American University of Cairo and relocated to New York to pursue a career in finance.
On her LinkedIn profile, Morgan describes herself as “a serial entrepreneur, prolific writer and investor in B2B software companies with high growth potential”.
Several of her articles for Forbes have focused on advice and opinions on the prospects and safety of cryptocurrencies.
The economist later set up a YouTube channel and openly stated her intention to become an influencer through her music.
On Morgan’s rap career website, she describes herself as “the infamous crocodile of Wall Street” who is “more fearless and shameless than ever.”
In music videos set in the Financial District, she dedicates her clunky songs to “the entrepreneurs and hackers, all the misfits and smart slackers.”
According to the New York Times, the clip was shot near her swanky $1 million apartment she shares with husband Ilya Lichtenstein.
Why was Heather Morgan arrested?
Morgan and her husband Lichtenstein, a tech entrepreneur, are accused of laundering a $4.5 billion cryptocurrency fortune into Bitcoin after the Bitfinex exchange was hacked in 2016.
The couple allegedly transferred 119,754 bitcoin to a digital wallet controlled by the husband, a dual citizen of Russia and the US, after a hacker breached the cryptocurrency exchange and initiated over 2,000 unauthorized transactions, according to court documents.
A filed criminal complaint reported that the stolen cryptocurrency was then spent on luxury goods including gold, NFTs, and a $500 Walmart gift card.
When prosecutors searched her home, they reportedly found a bag labeled “Brenner phones” and also discovered a file called “passport_ideas” on her computer.
Federal officials later confirmed they were able to seize about 94,000 stolen bitcoins with an estimated value of $3.6 billion
It is believed to be the largest single seizure of funds in the history of the Justice Department.
“Today’s arrests and the department’s largest financial seizure to date demonstrate that cryptocurrency is not a safe haven for criminals,” Assistant Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco said, calling the money laundering a “futile effort to maintain digital anonymity.”
She added: “Thanks to the meticulous work of law enforcement, the department has shown once again how it can and will follow the money, whatever form it takes.”
Why is Heather Morgan called Razzlekhan?
On her quest for online fame, Heather Morgan left a trail of videos on TikTok.
In one of them, she could be heard singing, “Yeah, that was cheesy/at least I’m not sleazy.”
She has since appeared online under the name Razzlekhan – although the true origin of her name is unknown.
A documentary dealing with allegations of Morgan and Lichtenstein’s money laundering scheme is coming to ABC.
The ABC news special entitled Truth & Lies: The Crocodile of Wall Street? will air on September 15, 2022 at 10 p.m.
Viewers can watch the documentary on ABC or on the ABC website.
Netflix also ordered a documentary about the couple just days after federal agents arrested them in February.
The documentaries will be helmed by Chris Smith, the man who also directed Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened and the hit 2020 series Tiger King.
