On January 7, 2023, Demetrius Haley and his colleagues at the Memphis Police Department reportedly injured Memphis resident Tire Nichols in a traffic stop, who was pronounced dead on January 10, 2023.


Demetrius’ colleagues involved in the incident were: Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith.
Subsequently, Memphis PD chief Cerelyn Davis issued a statement saying, “This is not just a professional failure, this is a failure of basic humanity towards another person.
“This incident was heinous, inconsiderate and inhumane.
“In the spirit of transparency, you will see this for yourself when the video is released in the coming days.”
