A coroner found Megan had sustained two stab wounds and the children were strangled, prosecutors said Todt had lived with the bodies of his families for more than a week before police arrived at the scene.

Todt claimed he and Megan made a pact to kill their children before the “Apocalypse‘ to attain ‘salvation’.

Pinnell said during Todt’s confession that he and his wife believed “they bring their children into this world, they should choose when to leave.”

“Everyone had to die to get to the other side together because the apocalypse was coming,” Pinnell told the jury in the opening statement of the trial.

In the recording, Todt claimed that when he and Megan told their kids they were going to kill themselves, they said, “We don’t want you to die. We want to die with you.”

However, Todt changed his story in court and maintained his innocence in the murders and said his wife killed their children and the dog before she stabbed herself.

“I loved my wife. I loved my children,” he told the judge. “They came first in my life. I did not do that. I took care of my wife. I took care of children. I did everything I could.”

What was Anthony Todt accused of?

Prosecutors charged Anthony Todt with the first-degree murder of his wife and three children and animal cruelty.

Throughout the trial, despite the recorded confession made after his arrest, Todt continued to maintain his innocence.

In court, Todt claimed his wife had been ill and described her as an invalid who was so ill that she could neither walk up the stairs nor take care of herself.

Megan Todt’s uncle Stewart Peil testified that he saw no sign of Megan being unwell and had no knowledge of a suicide pact or Megan’s conspiratorial belief in an apocalypse.

The last time Peil said he saw the family alive was six months ago and everything seemed normal.

“She was fine, the kids were fine, everyone was fine,” he said during his testimony.

“She was very ill ten years ago but she was treated and she was fine and recovering,” he said.

“…There was never a hint that she was frail or weak. This whole thing about her being an invalid for him to take care of didn’t agree with me.”

That Orlando Sentinel reported when Todt confessed he told investigators he first killed his youngest daughter and sat on her bed for a while before smothering her with a pillow.

“I had to save her soul,” the newspaper reported. “I wanted her to be with us.”

Has he been convicted?

Anthony Todt was convicted on April 14, 2022 on all charges of first-degree murder of his wife and children and one animal cruelty charge for killing the family dog, Breezy.

Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, and after the 12-member jury found Todt guilty, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Todt took the stand one final time on April 13, telling the jury, “I covered for my wife, apparently unsuccessfully. I had no idea how my children died.”

“My testimony today is the fact that Megan killed her children and killed herself,” he said.

In closing arguments, Pinnell told jurors that Todt described himself as “that loyal, ‘I’ll do anything, I’ll take the blame for Megan’ man.”

“But something interesting he said was, ‘Megan killed her kids.’ Not our children, not my children, their children.”

Todt’s father, Bob Todt, told the Orlando Sentinel that he felt his son’s confessions should not have been allowed at trial because of his poor mental health.

He claimed Todt suffered from poor mental health and was hospitalized under the Baker Act.

“I think blocking his mental abilities was killer,” he told the Orlando Sentineladding, “I don’t know how to deal with that.”
