Nee and Eunice Abloh met in Accra, the capital of Ghana, in the 1970s.

Virgil once told The Guardian that “they eventually wanted to go west where their dreams were”.

The two married and moved to the United States, where they gave birth to Virgil Abloh on September 30, 1980 in a suburb outside of Chicago.

According to an article published by The New Yorker in 2019, “Nee worked at a paint company in Rockford and Eunice worked as a seamstress. Eunice taught Abloh how to use a sewing machine, and he began designing T-shirts at a young age.”

The couple also have a daughter, Edwina.

When Virgil Abloh’s death was announced, his team posted a picture of the late fashion designer on his Instagram profile, adding the caption: “He is supported by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Gray Abloh, his sister Edwina , survives Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”

How did Virgil Abloh die?

On Sunday November 28th, 2021, it was announced that Virgil Abloh had died after a secret battle with cancer.

He suffered from cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare type of cancer in which tumors develop on or around the heart.

Virgil was 41 years old at the time of his death.

LVMH, the French company with stakes in several luxury brands including Louis Vuitton and Off-White, also released a statement after announcing his death.

“We are all shocked by this terrible news,” said Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH.

“Virgil was not only a brilliant designer, a visionary, he was also a man of beautiful soul and great wisdom.

“The LVMH family joins me at this moment of great sadness and we are all thinking of his loved ones after the passing of their husband, father, brother or friend.”

Virgil Abloh founded Off-White in 2013 and was appointed artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s ready-to-wear line in 2018.
