CANDY Montgomery was a 30-year-old mother of two in the early 1980s when she was accused of the murder of her friend Betty Gore.
Gore was found dead in her home on June 13, 1980, after being hit 41 times with an ax.
Who is Candy Montgomery?
Candy Montgomery was a homemaker who lived in the quiet small town of Wylie, Texas, taking care of her and her husband’s two children.
The family’s life collapsed when their friend was found brutally murdered while their 1-year-old lay crying in a nearby crib.
Montgomery was charged with murder, but as she took up position in the courtroom, she claimed to have defended herself.
She told the judge and jury that she stopped by Betty Gore’s house on June 13 to pick up a bathing suit for Gore’s daughter, who was staying with her that night.
Montgomery went on to say she had an affair with Gore’s husband and because of this she claimed Gore attacked her with an axe.
At the time, she said she passed out and when she regained consciousness, Gore was dead and she went to pick up the kids from school.
During the final days of the trial, Montgomery defense attorney Don Crowder said in his final arguments that the prosecution “did not present a single piece of evidence to refute the self-defense testimony.”
The jury, composed of nine women and three men, left the courtroom to deliberate, and when they read the final verdict, Montgomery was declared innocent of Gore’s murder.
It was decided that Montgomery had acted in self-defense, and Crowder told UPI at the time, “We’re just very happy, very happy. We are proud that the jury had enough courage to stand up.”
Gore’s daughter Bethany was the baby left crying in her crib when her mother was killed, and speaking to the Dallas Morning News in 2000, she said, “I just think[Montgomery]got away with it.”
Her sister, Alisa Gore Harder, added, “My family has a lot of anger and hatred towards her.”
Who are Candy Montgomery’s children?
Montgomery and her husband Pat had two children about whom little is known.
Movies and TV series have been made about the murders since the trial, and the two children, who were never mentioned in court, have been given aliases.
In the Hulu documentaries, the children are named Becky and Jason, but in the 1990 TV movie A Killing in a Small Town, their names are Sara and Sean.
However, The Cinemaholic has reported that Montgomery’s children’s real names are Jennifer and Ian.
The Montgomery family left Texas after Candy Montgomery was acquitted of murder and moved to Georgia, where she is said to still live.
A family member told Buzzfeed News that the new Montgomery documentaries are forcing her to relive the horrifying events of more than four decades ago.
“It’s extremely frustrating and definitely stressful,” the family member told Buzzfeed News.
“I hate it when I’m just trying to scroll through the Hulu menu and am presented with a giant image of ‘Candy.'”
Where can I watch the Hulu docuseries Candy?
The first episode of the Hulu miniseries, Candy, premiered on May 9, 2022, and the following four episodes will air nightly.
Candy stars Jessica Biel, Melanie Lynskey as Betty Gore, Timothy Simons as Pat Montgomery and Pablo Schreiber as Alan Gore.
“It’s going to be unsettling and stressful all the way through,” Simons told ABC7 News.
Adding Schreiber, “In every single episode, it feels like we’re being pulled into this space to experience something that we probably don’t want to experience but need to.”
