Which countries have been added to the red list?

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed that six countries have been added to the red list.

South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia are currently 12 months old.

He said in a statement yesterday: “From 12pm tomorrow, six countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini & Namibia have been added to the UK’s red list following early detection of the virus. new B.1.1.529 body abroad.

“We are currently taking precautions and will implement a temporary flight ban over the weekend.”

Although the traffic light system was effectively phased out earlier this month, the redlisting procedures are still in place as a precautionary measure.

The government warned that countries could be put back on the list if cases start to increase.

Do I have to quarantine when I return from other countries?

Hotel quarantine rules still apply, if returning from Sunday.

Shapps confirmed: “If you’ve been to any of these countries in the last 10 days, as of now, go into home quarantine and Test & Trace will contact you.

“From 12 noon tomorrow, the red list and the ban on direct flights to these countries will take effect, you must quarantine at home.

“If you have visited any of these countries in the last 10 days and arrived after 4 a.m. on Sunday, you MUST book quarantine at an approved facility.”

Anyone returning from a red-listed country must pre-book a stay at a government-mandated hotel, which is quarantined for 10 days for a fee of £2,285 per person.

An additional person pays £1,430, while children pay £325.

Why are countries added to the red list?

New redlisted countries have been added following the discovery of a new strain of Covid, due to fears it could threaten UK vaccine deployment.

Experts warn the strain is behind an explosion of new cases in South Africa, with some regions seeing a six-fold increase in infections in just a few days.

Health Minister Sajid Javid said the new variant identified in South Africa “may be more transmissible” than the Delta strain, and added “the vaccine we currently have may be less effective”.

Now known as B.1.1.529, this bug has 32 mutations – twice as many as the delta variant.

Government scientists were alarmed last night by the new virus, saying their main worry was that the virus’ mutant protein was “significantly different” from the original Covid virus.

It means that vaccines and blockbuster new drugs will struggle to neutralize it – with optimistic estimates, it will reduce effectiveness by about a third.
