Nigeria was added to the list after 21 cases of Omicron reported in the UK were linked to travel from the country, for a total of 134 UK cases reported.

Which countries have been added to the red list?

Nigeria joins Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia on the red list.

Although the traffic light system was effectively phased out earlier this month, the redlisting procedures are still in place as a precautionary measure.

The government warned that countries could be put back on the list if cases start to increase.

Redlisting additions will be reviewed at a three-week review point on December 20.

Do I have to quarantine when I return from other countries?

Hotel quarantine rules still apply, if returning from a red-listed country.

Anyone returning from a red-listed country must pre-book a stay at a government-mandated hotel, which is quarantined for 10 days for a fee of £2,285 per person.

An additional person pays £1,430, while children pay £325.

Why are countries added to the red list?

New red list countries have been added after discovery Omicron Covid strain, due to fears it could threaten the UK’s vaccine success.

The strain is behind an explosion of new cases in South Africa, with some regions seeing a six-fold increase in infections in just a few days.

There are concerns that the newly identified variant in South Africa is significantly more transmissible than the Delta strain and that the vaccines we currently have may be less effective.

Now known as B.1.1.529, this bug has 32 mutations – twice as many as the delta variant.

Government scientists are panicking about the new virus, saying their main worry is that the virus’s mutant protein is “significantly different” from the original Covid virus.

That means vaccines and blockbuster new drugs will struggle to neutralize it – with optimistic estimates, it will reduce effectiveness by about a third.
