Why is infant formula recalled?

Infant formulas have been recalled amid reports that four infants became ill with a “serious infection”.

Three babies were infected with Cronobacter sakazakii and one was infected with Salmonella Newport.

Cases were reported in Minnesota, Ohio and Texas, FDA confirmed.

All four cases required hospitalization and there is concern that Cronobacter may have contributed to one death.

Cronobacter can cause sepsis, meningitis, temperature changes, and intestinal damage, while symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

Which baby formulas have been recalled?

On Thursday, February 18, 2022, the Food and Drug Administration issued a recall order for certain Similac, Alimentum and EleCare powdered formula manufactured at the Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis, Michigan. .

Officials recommend that parents avoid products that include all of the following.

  • The first two digits on the code are 22-37
  • The code on the box is K8 SH or Z2.
  • Expiration date is April 2022 or later.

According to Abbott, no liquid formula, powdered milk or nutritional products from other establishments are affected by the recall.

The company also issued a voluntary recall and the products were tested, none of which were found to be positive for the bacteria.

Frank Yiannas, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response, said: “Because this is a product used as the sole source of nutrition for many of our nation’s infants and young children, the FDA should very concerned about these reports of infections.

“We want to reassure the public that we are working diligently with our partners to investigate complaints regarding these products, which we have noticed include infant formula manufactured manufactured at this facility, while we work to resolve this safety concern as quickly as possible.”
