On Friday, May 27, 2022, the NRA opened its annual convention in Houston despite facing backlash in connection with the Robb Elementary School shooting that occurred just days earlier.

As part of the annual convention, the NRA hosts the “NRA Grand Ole Night of Freedom” featuring various artists, but many have since retired from the show out of respect for those who lost their lives.

Artists who have retired include Lee Greenwood, Don McLean, Danielle Peck, Larry Gatlin, T. Graham Brown and Larry Stewart.

“As a father, I join the rest of America in being absolutely heartbroken by the horrific event that took place in Texas this week,” Greenwood said in a statement, according to Variety.

“I was supposed to perform with my band at the NRA private event on Saturday. After careful consideration we have decided to cancel the performance out of respect for those who are grieving the loss of these innocent children and teachers in Uvalde.”

In a separate statement from NBC News, McLean, known for the 1971 classic American Pie, added, “In light of recent events in Texas, I have decided that it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform for the NRA at Congress.” this week in Houston.

“I’m sure all the people planning to attend this event are also shocked and disgusted by these events. After all, we are all Americans.

“I share with the rest of the nation the sadness of this terrible, cruel loss.”

What did the NRA say about the Uvalde school shooting?

On May 24, 2022, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos entered Robb Elementary School with multiple guns, killing 19 students and two teachers.

Despite the horrific attack, the NRA continued its annual gathering, but said in an online statement that attendees would “reflect” on the shooting and “pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members and pledge our commitment to building our… schools to double,” according to the Associated Press.

According to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the city was “obligated” by contract to host the NRA event, but he urged politicians to skip it, the Associated Press adds.

“You can’t pray and offer condolences one day and go out and advocate for guns the next. That’s wrong,” Turner said.

How long will the NRA Convention last?

The 2022 event started on May 27th and will last until May 29th.

According to the NRA website, the exhibit hall will be open throughout the weekend and will consist of “over 14 acres of the latest guns and gear from the industry’s favorite companies.”
