ITV DRAMA The Bay will return with a third series in 2022.
Fans of the show are now eager to know where the popular TV show was actually filmed.
Where was ITV’s The Bay filmed?
The Bay is set and filmed in the seaside town of Morecambe.
The Lancashire town is north of Blackpool and was once a bustling seaside resort.
Morecambe has a five-mile stretch of sandy beach with a long promenade, with cafes, restaurants and hotels.
Screenwriter Daragh Carville intentionally wanted to focus his attention on Morecambe, mainly because it’s a place with a lot of history and incidentally where he’s spent a lot of time growing up.
Morecambe . Beach
Until the 1970s, as Britons increasingly could afford vacations outside of England, Morecambe became popular with tourists.
Filming took place along the beach, but especially around the Stone Pier, which is now all that remains of the original Victorian harbour.
Carville told Radio Times: “It’s a really interesting mix, because on the one hand it’s striking, it’s beautiful, it has a beautiful view of the bay towards the Lake District.
“But it also has a very special British or Irish seaside town quality, because as with many seaside places it has lost a bit of its raison d’être.”
Morecambe Bay in Lancashire is perhaps best known today for the 2004 blood cockle picking disaster, where at least 21 illegal Chinese migrant workers drowned due to high tides.
Morecambe and Manchester Police Station
Contrary to belief the police in Morecambe are real.
But Carville told Radio Times: “To be fair, and without wanting to spoil the magic of the television, the exterior and interior were filmed in different places.”
While the exterior was filmed in Morecambe, the interior of the meeting rooms, offices and interview rooms was filmed at an abandoned police station in Manchester.
Why was Morecambe chosen as The Bay location?
Talking about why he chose Morecambe, The Bay screenwriter Daragh Carville told Radio Times: “I think the combination of it is a beautiful place, but also a place that has to be difficult – There’s something about Morecambe, it’s really on the edge of the country, but it also has a metaphorical side.”
Carville seems to have a great deal of knowledge of the area before choosing to play it as one of the main filming locations for the TV series, seeing as he lives in Lancaster, which is just a block from Morecambe. land.
Daragh has been very adamant about the idea of using this location in the show, especially because it fits the story of something that looks “beautiful” but is “a problematic place”.
He added: “Morecambe is also not a place you usually see in a TV series.
“One of the reasons I wanted to write this story and put it there is simply because nothing has been put there before.
“And I think there’s something really important about seeing your own life represented on screen or on stage.”
When is The Bay season two next on TV?
The next show can be watched on January 19, 2022 at 9pm on ITV.
