The small town of Blyth, just south of the river on the east coast, is one of Vera’s most recognizable landmarks.

“This stretch of coast has these amazing turbines out at sea,” explained the show’s producer Margaret Mitchell.

“It’s a very edgy, metallic world out there with a desolate landscape. It’s pretty moody. The turbines are quite noticeable with the landscape. It’s a rugged coastal landscape.”

Whitley Bay is a small seaside town in Tyne and Wear which includes the village of Monkseaton. Filming also took place in Cramlington – a town of around 40,000 people nine miles north of Newcastle.

The Rendezvous Café in nearby Whitley Bay is also a regular filming location.

“The place has distinctive windows,” explains Mitchell, “it’s a timeless area, there’s a big statue just behind the priory where we filmed the episode Sandancers in the second series, and that’s also a well-known landmark.”

Rothbury

This quaint little Northumberland town was chosen for its natural beauty and river fans will remember it from Silent Voice in series two.

“This is where we filmed the whitewater swimmer,” Mitchell explains.

“We arrived very early in the morning on an October day when it was very foggy. The sun came up and shone through the water – that was particularly beautiful. It’s a great place for hiking.

“When you are here, you are completely overwhelmed by the vastness of the land, the light and the sky.

“You can see the wide panorama of the landscape, the light just fills your eyes. It’s incredible.”

Alnmouth and Monkwearmouth

Series 11 was also filmed in Alnmouth, a seaside village in Northumberland, which starred Vera in series 9.

Located on the Estuary of the River Aln, Alnmouth is in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Monkwearmouth, an area of Sunderland on the River Wear, will also appear in the series and is home to Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Abbey (a Benedictine monastery).

The abbey became the center of Anglo-Saxon scholarship spawned by the scholar Saint Bede – the patron saint of English writers and historians.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge

This north Newcastle city has a strong identity and is a mix of old and new, and it is here that Vera conducts much of her investigation.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge are two famous landmarks seen during Vera. “The city has great bridges that span the river,” says Mitchell.

“We used the Sage building, which is an amazing looking structure, and the Millennium Bridge in the background of the shots, as well as the Victorian buildings in the older parts of Newcastle.”

Holy Island

Actress Brenda Blethyn spoke about how they shot Vera in a landfill, which of course turned out to be very challenging.

However, they have filmed in much more pleasant places like Holy Island. “Other glorious filming locations included Holy Island, Lindisfarne and Spanish City in Whitley Bay, which has now been beautifully renovated,” said the 74-year-old actress.

“We continue to be amazed by the incredible locations we have available to film.”

She added: “I can honestly say I love the beauty of Northumberland, whether it’s the seascape, countryside, the moors or the city. It’s breathtaking.”

Baltic is a contemporary arts center on the south bank of the River Tyne next to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England.

It houses a frequently changing program of exhibitions and events without a permanent exhibition.

The Baltic could play a key role in Vera’s new series as actress Brenda Blethyn was spotted filming the new series in Gateshead.
