On September 14, 2022, R Kelly was found guilty in a federal trial in Chicago of videotape sexually abusing his 14-year-old goddaughter in the 1990s.
The R&B singer was also found guilty of sexual misconduct with two other minors around the same time.
This decision marks the second time in less than a year that Kelly has been convicted of serious federal sex crimes against children.
According to the Chicago Tribune, “He still faces 10 to 90 years in prison when he is sentenced by US District Judge Harry Leinenweber on February 23.”
However, R. Kelly had previously been sentenced to 30 years in prison on June 29, 2022.
R Kelly, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, was found guilty of all nine charges against him in September 2021.
The charges include bribery, forced labour, kidnapping, child exploitation, extortion of six alleged victims and cross-state sex trafficking.
During the trial, several accusers testified in great detail, alleging that Kelly subjected her to perverted and sadistic whims when she was a minor.
The court heard his victims – some as young as 14 when he abused them – being choked, beaten and ordered to consume their bodily fluids.
Following the jury’s verdict, women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred — who represented several of Kelly’s victims — described the musician as “the worst sexual predator to have stalked her in her 47-year legal career.”
His guilty verdict came more than ten years after he was acquitted of child pornography charges in a state trial in Illinois.
A documentary investigating his crimes, Surviving R Kelly, helped put him back in the spotlight.
Kelly has been in custody since being denied bail in October 2019.
Before his trial, he was transferred from the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
