“I desperately feel the weight of empowering other survivors before it’s too late, before they end up where I am or worse,” Nikki told ABC News.

“Even with a reduced sentence, even if I’d been acquitted, I’ll live with it for the rest of my life.”

While Nikki serves out the remainder of her prison term, she and Grover’s two children stay with her sister, Michelle Horton.

Michelle retains ongoing custody of Nikki’s son Ben and daughter Faye.

When was Nikki convicted?

On April 12, 2019, Nikki was found guilty of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

At that time she was sentenced to 19 years of life imprisonment.

She took the opportunity to address the court: “I know killing is not a solution and staying hurts, but leaving is not living.

“Often we end up dead or where I stand…alive but still not free. That’s why women don’t go.”

However, her sentence was reduced on July 14, 2021 due to guidelines outlined in the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act.

Although her conviction was upheld, the new sentence only required Nikki to live seven and a half years instead of 19.

How can I watch Nikki’s episode 20/20?

Nikki’s case is retold in an episode of ABC’s 20/20 entitled Kill or Be Killed.

On February 3, 2023, Kill or Be Killed is scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. EST on the aforementioned network.

The show features reports from host Juju Chang as she interviews investigators, family and friends close to the investigation.
