The LANDMARK area and resort Mar-a-Lago was built between 1924 and 1927.
Years after the death of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the original owner of Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump purchased the property and serves as his primary post-Presidency home.
Where is Mar-a-Lago?
Mar-a-Lago is a resort and historic landmark built by grain heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post in Palm Beach, Florida.
The 62,500-square-foot property was completed in 1927 and has around 126 rooms.
When Post died in 1973, she gave the property to the National Park Service in hopes that it could be used for state visits or as a white winter home.
However, the property was returned to the Post Foundation by an act of Congress in 1981 due to its costly maintenance.
It features the second largest mansion in the state of Florida and the 24th largest mansion in the United States.
When did Donald Trump buy the property in Florida?
In 1985, Trump bought Mar-a-Lago for about $10 million to $5 million.
The transaction included $3 million for the lavish facility and an additional $2 million for 400 feet of world-class beach directly across the street.
The property is valued at nearly $100 million.

As of 2019, Mar-a-Lago has served as Trump and Melania’s primary residence.
Throughout his presidency, he was often seen at the residence when not in the White House.
Earlier in December 2020, the Trump family had a feud with the DeMoss family over certain stipulations about the former party’s housing.
At the time, the latter reportedly initiated legal action to prevent them from withdrawing.
An attorney for the DeMoss family sent a letter to Palm Beach authorities and the US Secret Service, saying Trump had lost his legal right to live there permanently due to an alleged 1993 agreement.
The letter suggested the city avoid “an embarrassing situation” for the former president and urged them to inform Trump that he could not live there full-time.
Trump reportedly signed a “user agreement” in 1993 after converting the private residence into a social club.
Part of the agreement prohibits club members from spending more than 21 days a year in the club’s guest suites or staying there for more than seven consecutive days.
However, Trump visited more than 30 times during his tenure at the White House, breaking his rule with more than 130 nights worth of stays.
Trump also had to ensure that more than half of the club’s members live or work in Palm Beach and that there are no more than 500 members.
What is the Mar-a-Lago Club?
Donald Trump faced financial difficulties in the late ’90s and decided to convert Mar-a-Lago into small shared lots to make money.
However, the City Council rejected the proposal and the property was converted into a members-only club.
The property operates as a resort and hotel for members and rents out space for private events.
Mar-a-Lago Club membership required a $200,000 initiation fee until 2012, when it was reduced to $100,000.
Additionally, annual dues are $14,000 and there is a $2,000 annual food minimum.
According to the website, exclusive membership grants paying owners access to “Trump Spa and Salon, pool, beach club, stunning guest rooms and exclusive suites, a state-of-the-art fitness center, award-winning tennis courts, beautiful croquet lawns and an entertainment series featuring international world-renowned talent.”
Mar-a-Lago members can also use Trump Golf facilities in the United States.
According to the New York Times, billionaires such as William I. Koch, Thomas Peterffy, Richard LeFrak, Jeff Greene, insurance manager George Norcross, real estate developer Bruce Toll and Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy are members of the exclusive club.
