What condition is Ozzy Osbourne in?
Ozzy Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in February 2019.
He takes a “quite a lot” of medication to treat his nerve pain.
Ozzy’s health nightmare began when he suffered a fall in 2019 and required neck surgery.
After the operation he had nerve pain and since then doctors have been struggling to determine whether the fall, the surgery or Parkinson’s disease are to blame for his pain.
What did Ozzy say about Parkinson’s disease?
In January 2020, Ozzy revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in an interview with his wife Sharon Osbourne on Good Morning America
He said: “It was a terrible challenge for us, I had to have an operation on my neck which got on my nerves.”
“I found out that I have a mild form of…” Ozzy then broke off, leaving his wife to finish the sentence.
She continued: “It’s Parkin, a form of Parkinson’s. There are so many different types of Parkinson’s.
“It’s not a death sentence by any means, but it does affect the nerves in your body.
“It’s like you have a good day, then a good day, and then a really bad day.”
Ozzy added: “A year ago I was in a terrible state. I’m on a lot of medication, mainly because of the surgery.
“I have numbness in this arm and my legs are getting cold. I don’t know if it’s Parkinson’s disease or what. That’s the problem.”
Symptoms of Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years.
It is believed that Parkinson’s disease affects about one in 500 people and most people who start to develop symptoms are over the age of 50.
Men have a slightly higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease than women.
Symptoms are usually divided into motor and non-motor problems.
They can include:
- involuntary shaking of certain parts of the body (tremor)
- slow movement
- stiff and inflexible muscles
- depression and anxiety
- balance problems
- loss of sense of smell
- sleep problems
- memory problems
What type of Parkinson’s does Ozzy have?
Ozzy has a type of Parkinson’s called Parkin, named for the gene linked to this type of disease.
It’s incurable, but there are treatments that help minimize symptoms.
