The next “Star Wars” movie to hit theaters will be Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron” project, which will look like “Top Gun” but with X-Wings. Through the Weekly entertainment, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy previously revealed that the film will “introduce a new generation of star-seeking pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives on a thrilling ride at incredible speeds. across the boundary.” She also added, “The legend of Rogue Squadron has long been a fan favorite and will transport us into a future era of the galaxy.”
When Lucasfilm first announced the film on Disney Investor Day 2020, the film was slated for a December 2023 release. However, as Patty Jenkins has an extremely busy schedule – constantly regarding Gal Gadot’s “Cleopatra” and “Wonder Woman 3” – Disney has delayed “Rogue Squadron” indefinitely, but we actually have some good news on that front.
In December 2021, a report from Limit line notes that Jenkins will be stepping down from directing “Cleopatra” so she can focus on both “Wonder Woman 3” and “Rogue Squadron.” So while the band of rebels may not have an original date of December 2023, it would still come sooner if Jenkins goes on to direct “Cleopatra”. That means Disney may be eyeing a 2024 release for “Rogue Squadron.”
Failing that, there’s Taika Waititi’s untitled project, which he’s working on with “One Night In Soho” co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The director of “Thor: Ragnarok” told Wired It’s still in the early stages of development, but he’s excited about the story, saying, “It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage, but we already have a story. I’m really excited. I’m excited about it because it feels so good to me.”
It’s clear that Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t given up on their “Star Wars” theatrical films yet, but it’ll be a while before we see them.
