When is Burns Night?

Every year the life and work of poet Robert Burns is celebrated around the world on January 25th – the day of his birth.

The tradition began after the Scottish lyricist’s death in 1796.

His friends decided they needed an annual event to celebrate his career.

The first Burns Night was held at Burns Cottage on 21 July 1801, the five year anniversary of his death.

It has since become an annual event, although the celebrations have been moved to January.

What is Burn’s Night?

Burns Night is now held every year on January 25th, which was his birthday.

As the festivities begin, everyone gathers, the host says a few words, everyone sits, and the Selkirk Grace is said.

The appetizer is served and the host recites the famous Burns Night Haggis poem Address to a Haggis, everyone toasts the haggis and the main course is served followed by dessert.

Revelers cut themselves haggis and ate neeps, tatties and a small dram – in other words, turnips, potatoes and whiskey.

After eating the delicious feast, there are more readings.

The first Burns recital is performed after the Burns Night meal, the Immortal Memory (the main speech honoring Burns) is given, the second Burns recital is performed, then there is a toast to the Lassies followed by an answer to the Toast to the Lassies before the final Burns concert is performed.

The host then thanks them, everyone stands and sings Auld Lang Syne, crossing their arms and shaking hands on the line “And there’s a hand, my trusty fere!”

How is Burns Night celebrated in Scotland?

A successful Burns Night consists of three key elements – haggis, whiskey and poetry.

In Scotland, many people host their own Burns Night dinners.

But there are also events where you can celebrate.

For those who don’t want to stay at home, pubs and restaurants also host events to celebrate the annual event.

Across the country, this annual celebration is held in high esteem by residents as Scots virtually connect with family back home in other parts of the world.
