What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is a national awareness day dedicated to trees and the important role they play in the environment.

The word arbor can be translated as “tree”.

Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April.

This year it is celebrated on April 29th.

Who Founded Arbor Day?

J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska resident and editor of the Nebraska newspaper, was a lover of trees and was a strong advocate for planting them statewide.

On January 4, 1872, Morton proposed a tree-planting leave after becoming Secretary of the Nebraska Territory.

The holiday became what is now known as Arbor Day.

The first celebration date was April 10, 1872, and more than 1 million trees are estimated to have been planted in the state, according to the official history page for the holiday.
