What is “The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe” about?

The drama will focus on how Anne became complicit in her husband’s cheating.

It will show how she had to convince the world, her family and friends, the police and insurance companies that he had disappeared in 2002 while canoeing off the coast of Seaton Carew in Cleveland, where the couple have two large houses with panoramic views the possessed sea.

Mortgaged to the hilt, Darwin had also accumulated £64,000 in debt on 13 credit cards, and his excessive spending had caused her finances to spiral out of control.

Anne would have preferred her husband to have gone bankrupt, but eventually she agreed to his absurd plan to fake his own death.

Darwin lay down while Anne was being questioned by the police and began weaving a web of deception.

The deceit took its toll on Anne, who lied to her sons Mark and Anthony for five years, while in the early days of the deceit her husband secretly lived in a one-bedroom adjoining the house he once shared with Anne.

Devastated by the loss of their father, neither son had any idea their parents were capable of such a betrayal.

Anne and John eventually decided to leave Seaton Carew and move to Panama City to start a new life together before their secret was exposed in July 2006 with the discovery of an infamous photo of them posing in a Panama real estate office.

At her trial, Anne pleaded not guilty, arguing that she was coerced into the conspiracy by her husband, but the jury didn’t believe her.

She and her husband were both detained for more than 6 years.

Where are the real John and Anne Darwin now?

John is now settled in the Philippines with his new wife Mercy May, 48.

The couple married in 2015 after beginning an online romance.

The ex-teacher receives a UK state pension of around £134 a week while his wife – a mother of three – sublets a clothes stall in a Manila market and runs a retail outlet, the Mirror reported.

Anne now lives a quiet life near York and has reconciled with her sons.
