A US SECRET company funded by a billionaire Facebook investor was once accused of being able to hack WhatsApp.
The uncanny connection involves famous Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Thiel, who became the social network’s first outside investor in 2004.
Thiel has had success as one of the co-founders of PayPal and has gone on to invest in many companies.
A big part of that is his company Founders Fund, which is said to be Boldend’s big backer.
Boldend, Theo New York Timesquietly told defense giant Raytheon that it could hack WhatsApp in January 2021.
Fortunately, the vulnerability was removed sometime in a software update.
The story is ironic because Facebook’s parent company Meta also owns WhatsApp, meaning that Thiel would effectively pay one company to hack the products of another company he is associated with.
Boldend is fairly tight-lipped about its business as it has only one major client, the US Government.
But its alleged activities suggest it wants to cede power to both sides of the cybersecurity space – defending and attacking.
A close source said Forbes that Boldend is not typical to exploit like it did for WhatsApp, while one said it may have never actually been used.
It comes amid a broader report that the FBI has secretly bought the now notorious spyware from the Israeli company NSO Group, while homegrown experts are trying to build a their own similarity.
Reports claim US intelligence and security services discovered using NSO’s Pegasus software to hack Americans.
Spies seem to have bought and tested it for years.
The tool has been noticed for allegedly being abused to hack human rights activists, journalists and dissidents.
In other news, Apple has revealed a bunch of New emojis for iPhoneincludes a pregnant man and two saucy icons.
Experts have warned that the future Space launches can be dangerous if “stupid” regimes like Russia don’t stop blowing up the sky creating debris.
And most popular phone since a millennium has been announced, with many people shocked to learn it’s not an iPhone.
