What You Never Noticed About Music In Modern Movies

Follow Decision Lab. Lately, filmmakers have been so overwhelmed with music to choose from that they rely on something called temporary music (via Turn), and it drove some audio engineers completely crazy. Temporary tracks are generic tracks from other movies that serve as placeholders during editing. But since filmmakers are often so used to hearing this placeholder music, the tracks often don’t change much, if at all. They might tweak it a bit here and there to make it sound original, but mostly the same track is recycled over and over again.
And technology is only making things worse. More of these tracks are now available than ever before, prompting filmmakers to include as many tracks in their movies as possible. As an anonymous source told /Film, “We literally have hundreds of songs at our disposal … in one final mix, so we have a lot to deal with.” There’s a lot to juggle and Hollywood seems to be struggling to keep up.
