One theme that the Netflix version of “The Witcher” highlights is the ability of the magic user to repair anything and everything they don’t like about their appearance. All graduating witches are more beautiful than ever. In particular, Yennefer had to go through an extremely traumatic process to correct her hunchback.
And although Yennefer corrected hunchback in Andrzej Sapowski’s book, the results were different. Books indicate that magicians can correct physical flaws, but only to a certain extent. In fact, the books describe the women of the command as just “fake beauty”. Magic fixes all major flaws, but cannot fix everything.
In his novel “The Last Wish”, Geralt describes Yennefer as attractive in a way but “not a great beauty.” While magic corrected her hunchback, she still showed evidence of her past deformity. One of her roles is described as taller than the other. So, while what was considered a major physical flaw in the books has been largely fixed, it’s still far from perfect. This is a different picture from what the show portrays.
