Harris became a household name during her college years at Delta State, where she led her team to win three consecutive AIAW national championships and was also named MVP in both three seasons.

She also won her first Honda Sports Award for basketball in her senior year.

After working at Delta State, she went on to become the first and only woman to be officially accepted NBA The team behind the New Orleans Jazz selected her as the 137th overall pick of the 1977 NBA Draft.

Despite being drafted, she is said to have refused to try out for the team due to her pregnancy, according to The Athletic.
