In a joint statement to the Associated Press, their daughters said: “Today we sisters witnessed a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to mental illness.”

Wynonna and Ashley ended their unfortunate revelation by saying, “We’re in uncharted territory.”

The country hitmaker passed away a day before she and her eldest daughter were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, but the sisters still attended the ceremony honoring their mother.

Ashley confirmed the tragedy during an appearance on Good Morning American while speaking to Diane Sawyer about her mother’s death.

“She used a gun…my mom used a gun,” Ashley told Sawyer Variety at the time.

“So that’s the information that we’re very uncomfortable sharing, but understand that if we don’t say it, we’re in a position where someone else will.”
