What is the Senate Gun Reform Treaty?

On June 12, 2022, a bipartisan group of senators reached agreement on new gun safety legislation.

The groundbreaking proposal includes promoting “red flag” laws and improving background checks on gun buyers.

“Today we are announcing a sensible, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence in our country,” the group said in a statement via NBC News.

“Families are afraid, and it is our duty to come together and do something that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”

Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. John Cornyn add that the new measures “will not affect the gun rights of law-abiding Americans,” according to NBC News.

“Our plan increases the resources needed for mental health, improves school safety and support for students, and helps ensure dangerous criminals and those identified as mentally ill cannot purchase guns,” the statement continued.

“Most importantly, our plan saves lives while protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. We look forward to garnering broad, bipartisan support and turning our sensible proposal into law.”

The new legislation comes amid multiple mass shootings in 2022 alone, including the Robb Elementary school shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers, and the deadly Tops supermarket shooting in Buffalo, New York, at May 10 people died people.

At the time of this writing, the final bill has not yet been written.

What are Red Flag Laws?

Red flag laws have been a controversial subject over the years, with many arguing that they violate the Second Amendment.

Essentially, the warning signals allow police, family members, employees and others to petition a state court to keep firearms away from people who are deemed to pose a risk to themselves or others.

Currently, 19 states and Washington DC have red flag laws on the books, and this new deal will give other states more resources to implement them.

NBC News notes that the new agreement will also create a stricter process for background checks on people between the ages of 18 and 21.

What did President Joe Biden say about the Senate gun reform deal?

The Senate’s new proposal comes just a day after thousands of Americans protested across the country for tougher gun laws.

Since the deal was announced, it has garnered support from many, including President Joe Biden.

“I want to thank Senator Chris Murphy and the bipartisan group for their gun safety proposal. It’s not doing everything I think is necessary, but it reflects important steps in the right direction,” Biden tweeted.

“With bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delays. Let’s do that.”

Biden is a well-known advocate for gun control and has previously urged members of Congress to cooperate on gun reform.

The day before, Biden also showed his support for the March for Our Lives movement, which began in 2018 after the deadly Parkland, Florida shooting.

“Today, young people across the country are marching again with @AMarch4OurLives to urge Congress to pass sane gun safety legislation that has the support of the majority of Americans and gun owners,” he said at the time.

“I join them in repeating my call to Congress: do something.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed her support for the new agreement, writing: “This gun safety proposal is an important step to save lives. While it doesn’t reflect everything we need to do, I applaud Senator Chris Murphy and the bipartisan group of leaders who have come together to bring this forward. Enough is enough.”
