Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act to “strengthen and support law enforcement agencies at all levels.”
What is the Emergencies Act?
Trudeau enacted the Emergencies Act for the first time in the act’s 35-year history in response to right-wing protesters against vaccine regulations and established blockade on Canada’s most important highways.
In a statement released on February 15, 2022, Trudeau speak “Police will be given more tools to restore order in places where public gatherings constitute illegal and dangerous activities, such as blockades and occupations as seen in Ottawa, Ambassador Bridge and others. These tools include enhancing their ability to fine or imprison.”
Reported by CBC Newsa Canadian press agency, found that the Emergencies Act was used to briefly empower the federal government to quell a crisis.
The Canadian Prime Minister noted that invoking the Emergencies Act is a last resort.
What is the “Freedom Convoy”?
Freedom Convoy was a social movement of conservative, anti-vaccination protesters who used vehicles to block the Ambassador Bridge, a road leading to Windsor, Ontario and Detroit and seize other properties in protest.
They are calling for the removal of all COVID-19 protocols and have floated others extremist ideas and images.
Trudeau’s statement refers to a specific directive to tow vehicles blocking the road.
At least 12 people were arrested during the clearing of the streets of protesters and vehicles.
The prime minister also said the government would take a tough stance on “regulating and prohibiting the use of assets to finance or support illegal blockades.”
Crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has suspended Freedom Convoy accounts and refunded nearly $10 million in donations.
When will the Emergencies Act be revoked?
Trudeau did not give an exact date for when the legislation would be enacted.
“The scope of these measures will be time-limited, geo-targeted, as well as reasonable and commensurate with the threats they must address,” he told the press.
The Ambassador Bridge entered commercial use for the first time on February 13, 2022.
“This is about keeping Canadians safe, protecting people’s jobs and restoring trust in our institutions.”
