WHAT is a celebration without food? Nothing, and that’s why the platinum anniversary celebrations will be rounded off with a big anniversary lunch.
Here’s all about the Big Jubilee Lunch and what you need to know about hosting one.
What is the big anniversary lunch?
Since its inception in 2009, the annual Big Lunch, an Eden Project idea, has encouraged communities to come together and have street parties in the spirit of friendship.
Every summer, neighbors across the UK organize picnics, street lunches, BBQs and get-togethers to get to know each other better.
This year, as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, people are encouraged to “share friendship, food and fun with neighbours” during the big Jubilee Dinner on 5 June 2022.
Similar events were held in the summer of 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Thousands of communities have already expressed an interest in participating, and so far more than 1,400 have registered.
Organizers encourage everyone to join in the neighborhood fun, pointing out that it can be anything from “a small gathering in a garden, park or driveway, to a larger trestle party in the middle of your street.”
Do you need a license to host a large anniversary luncheon street party?
If you’re thinking of throwing a street party to mark the Queen’s 70th reign, you’ll need to make sure you get the appropriate permits in advance.
It is best to contact your municipal administration at least 12 weeks before the event, as the processing of the application can take some time.
For this year’s anniversary dinner, this means contacting the municipal council by mid-March at the latest.
In England and Wales you can apply to organize a street party through the government website.
If the alcohol at the event is provided free of charge, no license is required.
As for dining, no license is required until 11pm, but that may change if the festivities get late.
In Scotland it is best to contact your local council’s roads and communities department to obtain a permit.
However, if you are in an area where alcohol is prohibited in “public places,” you and your neighbors may need to adhere to drinking and eating in private property, such as a yard or driveway.
The parties also typically do not require a license unless they count as an “exhibition”, “demonstration”, “concert” or alcohol sale.
Where is the Windsor Big Jubilee Lunch held?
Prince Edward and his wife Sophie officiated at the Windsor Big Jubilee Lunch on June 5.
The Earl and Countess of Wessex sat with others at a ‘Long Table’ down the Long Walk leading to Windsor Castle.
The couple hope to break the world record for longest dining table as they put together 488 in front of the Berkshire residence.
