What is Paul Rudd’s ‘Mac and Me’ joke about?

Rudd, 52, has appeared alongside O’Brien, 58, on several occasions over the years, often cracking the same joke.

During the performances, Rudd gave the late-night host a clip from a “new movie,” but it would ultimately be the same scene from the 1988 film Mac and Me.

While O’Brien’s show Conan may have ended, Rudd revived the gag during an appearance on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast.

“It was really great because I don’t usually get the opportunity to work on my own stuff like that,” Rudd explained to the host.

“I’m usually a hit man. But it was fun and I worked on it and recorded it with my friends.”

When O’Brien asked Rudd to elaborate on the “new project” he was proposing, Rudd explained that it was a four-episode series and then played the classic clip.

“Oh for heaven’s sake!” said O’Brien after the clip started playing. “Why? Why! You can’t do that on a podcast! That’s why I didn’t see it coming! It’s a visual joke!”

Why did Conan end?

O’Brien’s late night show was on TBS for over 11 years, but in May 2021 it was announced that it was finally coming to an end.

Despite the news, he gave fans hope after revealing it would eventually return to HBO Max.

“We’re ending our TBS show,” O’Brien told Newsweek at the time. “The plan is to return to HBO Max at some point in the near future with what I think will be my fourth iteration of a program.”

Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max, added, “Conan’s unique brand of energetic, relatable, and at times absurd comedy has enchanted late-night audiences for nearly three decades. We can’t wait to see what he and the rest of Team Coco dream of doing each week for this brand new, diverse format.”

At this point, it’s still unclear when the show will go via HBO Max.
