What is Lemon8?

Lemon8 is a social media platform developed by Chinese company ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

As Vice reports, it was first launched in Japan in 2020.

It then launched in the United States and the United Kingdom in February 2023, Business Insider reported.

According to TechCrunch, Lemon8 is an “Instagram rival” that bills itself as a “lifestyle community.”

The Apple App Store description states: “Lemon8 is a content sharing platform with a youthful community. Here you can discover beautiful, authentic and diverse content. It is THE place to share and explore.”

The app is aimed at “young creatives” and allows them to “share a variety of content” ranging from topics such as food, makeup, fashion, homeware, travel and pets.

Like TikTok — which it bills as the platform’s “sister app” — Lemon8 includes a “For You” section that “recommends you a personalized feed based on the videos and images you like.”

It encourages users to express themselves by sharing their “passions” which they can then “discuss freely” with other users.

What other features does Lemon8 offer its users?

As also discussed in the Apple App Store, Lemon8 allows its users to write texts, create videos and edit images “with ease”.

It offers its content creators a wide range of filters, stickers, fonts, and templates to choose from to ensure these are “intuitive to use”.

The platform also invites people to “explore and discover” via hashtags and by “searching by keyword”.

How popular is Lemon8?

Lemon8 has already become very popular in the United States.

As reported by TechCrunch, on Monday, March 27, 2023, it topped the US App Store charts when it was voted “No. 10 of the overall app”. This included both apps and games.

The publication reported that it “ranked #9 on the App Store’s top apps list, excluding games,” as of Tuesday, March 28.

TechCrunch also noted that prior to this new ranking, Lemon8 “had never previously landed in the top 200 on the overall US chart,” according to data.ai’s App Store Intelligence.
