Writer Anna Pasternak belonged to the same social circles as Maxwell when she was a student at Oxford and told the BBC: “I knew even as a student that she was interested in power and money.

“She was one of those people at parties who would always look over your shoulder to see if there was someone more powerful or interesting while she kissed you in the air.”

However, when Maxwell’s father was found dead on his yacht in 1991, their financial support collapsed.

More on Ghislaine Maxwell

Harry Mount met Maxwell while working at the New York branch of the Daily Telegraph.

In September 2021, Mount wrote about the encounter in Oldie Magazine.

“If I had dug a little deeper I would have noticed something was fishy,” he wrote.

“When Robert Maxwell died in massive debt, Ghislaine Maxwell was left with an annual income of £80,000 from a trust fund.

“A lot of money – a lot more than I made. But I lived in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village. And here she was in a mega castle – with 12 rooms, eight fireplaces and an elevator.”

He reported that evidence showed her former partner Jeffrey Epstein bought the apartment in 2000.

Mount went on to write: “Given all the gifts of God as a child – money, looks and education – she was also given a devil father: a brute who alternately bullied and spoiled her and got her through the endowment of a Maxwell to Oxford University.” Scholarship at her college Balliol, which she then used.

He concluded: “Hence the odd combination of being ultra-well connected while fundamentally unsure of oneself, along with a desperate desire to stick with the great and good.

“Hence the curiosity and charm with a shy new Brit in town. Hence the willingness to live in a house a monster bought for her.”

Is Ghislaine Maxwell Married?

Scott Borgerson was allegedly Maxwell’s secret husband after their marital status was revealed Tuesday, July 14, 2020, when Manhattan prosecutors accused her of intentionally concealing their assets, the New York Post reported.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Moe told Manhattan Federal Judge Alison Nathan, “The defendant also does not provide any information about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse, whose identity she declined to disclose to investigating authorities.”

Maxwell later told court chiefs that before her arrest, she had tried to file for divorce so her husband wouldn’t suffer from “being associated with her.”

It came after Borgerson was linked to the $1 million New Hampshire mansion where Maxwell was captured by the FBI.

The court previously heard Maxwell claim to have bought her hideout with an ex-military man named “Scott.”

Both “Scott” and Ghislaine – who go by the name “Jen” – also shared the same surname, “Marshall”.

Borgerson has always denied their relationship, saying they are just old friends.

Why was Ghislaine Maxwell arrested?

When Jeffrey Epstein was arrested by law enforcement in New Jersey on July 6, 2019, Maxwell disappeared from public view until her arrest.

Ghislaine Maxwell, who was in hiding, was arrested by the FBI on July 2, 2020 in New Hampshire on charges related to Epstein.

Maxwell’s trial began on November 29, 2021 in New York City.

She is due to be sentenced on June 28, 2022, and prosecutors are fighting for a 55-year sentence for the disgraced British socialite.

Maxwell has repeatedly denied any involvement in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

However, Maxwell’s attorneys have argued that she should receive leniency and only a maximum of 20 years in prison.

“Ms. Maxwell cannot and should not bear the entire penalty for which Epstein should have been held responsible.”

They argued: “Ms Maxwell has already endured a difficult time in detention in conditions far more onerous and punitive than a typical pre-trial detainee, and she is preparing to spend significantly more time behind bars. Her life has been ruined.

“Ms. Maxwell is not a dangerous criminal or a habitual offender. She’s someone who wants nothing more than to have a normal family life — something she was denied because of her association with Epstein and now almost certainly will never have,” they continued.

“The public need not be protected from Ms. Maxwell and such considerations should have no weight in determining her judgment.”

Her attorneys argued that Maxwell’s “difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father … left her vulnerable to Epstein.”

They concluded, “It’s the biggest mistake she’s made in her life, and one she hasn’t repeated and will never repeat.”

Maxwell was found guilty on December 29, 2021 on five of the six charges against her.
