Who is Brooks Koepka?

Brooks Koepka has been a professional golfer since 2012 and joined the PGA Tour in 2014.

The announcement comes just a week after Koepka slammed reporters at a press conference ahead of the US Open when he said they were casting a “black cloud” over the event.

“I’m here at the US Open,” Koepka said when asked about the new league.

“I’m ready to play the US Open and I also kinda suck that you all are throwing this black cloud over the US Open.

“It’s one of my favorite events. I don’t know why you keep doing this. The more legs you give [LIV Golf]the more you talk about it.”

“Trying to focus on the US Open, man,” Koepka continued. “I legitimately don’t understand. I’m tired of the conversations. I’m sick of all this stuff.

“Like I said, you guys are throwing a black cloud at the US Open. I think that sucks.”

Koepka joins other top golfers who have made the move to the LIV including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.

Why is there controversy surrounding the LIV?

LIV Golf has been accused of being supported by the government of Saudi Arabia, which allegedly committed human rights abuses.

The above-average payout and less stringent schedule have reportedly appealed to players making the switch.

The PGA has since banned members who joined LIV from participating in its tournaments.

According to The Washington Post, LIV Golf has been accused of “sports laundering” human rights abuses committed under the Saudi government.

Human rights abuses cited include the 2018 killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

A total of 17 golfers were banned by the PGA from joining LIV Golf, and NPR reported that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said the players “decided to leave the PGA TOUR by willfully violating a rule.” she added her choice for her own financial reasons.”

Players banned from the PGA include Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na and Talor Gooch.
