How did viewers react?
BAFTA viewers were quick to respond to Ariana’s rap with their own takes.
Taking to Twitter, a user said: “Ariana DeBose knows what camp is. It’s terrifying and hilarious and I can’t stop watching it.”
A second user tweeted, “Ariana Debose’s performance was hilarious but people need to dismiss her, my girlfriend was Spielberg’s Anita and none of you guys can forget that.”
“I’m sorry but the Ariana Debose video is hilarious…Angela Bassett,” commented another.
As reactions continued to pour in, one fan said, “I literally couldn’t fall asleep last night as ‘Angela Bassett did that thing’ played over and over in my head.”
Another fan said, “This video of ‘Angela Bassett did that thing, Viola Davis my royal wife’ SEND ME.”
While some people noted the comical nature of Ariana’s song, others also noted the nominees’ reaction.
“Not Cate, Michelle and Jamie Lee pretending to be nice,” one viewer tweeted with multiple laughing emojis.
Another viewer quipped, “The best part about this Ariana Debose Baftas disaster was everyone smiled nervously and then boom cut to Jamie Lee Curtis who just nodded her little head… WONDERFUL.”
“Ana de Armas looking bored was a highlight too,” commented a third user.
When did Ariana delete her Twitter?
Two days after the BAFTA broadcast, netizens noticed that Ariana deactivated her Twitter account.
In defense of the prom actress and her viral show moment, ceremony producer Nick Bullen told Variety, “I think it’s incredibly unfair, to be honest. I absolutely loved it.
“Everyone I spoke to that was in the room absolutely loved it. She’s a big star, she was incredible.
“That rap section in the middle mentioning the women in the room came out because it was a great year for women in film and we wanted to celebrate that.
“I think a lot of people don’t like change and there’s a perception that the BAFTAs need to be that somewhat stuffy, traditional British message from central England.”
He added: “We don’t just want to appeal to the traditional British awards audience.
“The social media presence was incredibly important to us.
“The message to younger people was important to us. The message to the various groups across the UK was important to us.
“We wanted to spread the message that this is a show for everyone and I think some people don’t like that change.”
