What if an asteroid hit Earth today? – You can survive if you stay underground

AN ASTEROID is expected to crash into Earth soon but space agencies keep an eye on them as a precaution.

Depending on the size of the space rock, an asteroid impact could be an extinction-level event, and the researchers created simulations to see how bad it could be.

What would happen if an asteroid hit the Earth?

If you’ve seen the Netflix series Don’t Look Up, you’re probably worried about the asteroid’s potential impacts.

However, not all asteroids mean the end of humanity.

The space rock would have to be pretty big to kill us all.

Scientists think the asteroid that wiped out this dinosaur was about 7.5 miles wide.

If an asteroid of today’s size were to hit Earth, everything would instantly change due to the force of the impact and its knock on the environment.

Experts say we will experience fires, shock waves, thermal radiation, large craters, acid rain and giant tsunamis if the asteroid hits the water.

Britt ScharringhausenAn associate professor of physics and astronomy at Beloit University, told Inverse: “All the ash from the fire and all the finer-grained debris from the collision will linger in the atmosphere for a long time. , and we get a so-called winter impact.

“It will block sunlight, and all the ash that falls into the ocean will acidify the top layers.

“So you burn everything, kill everything in the ocean, and freeze the Earth, and it goes through about two consecutive winter years.”

Scharringhausen doesn’t think all life on Earth will die after a massive asteroid collision.

Several small creators survived the asteroid strike that killed off the dinosaurs.

If humans take the right precautions, there’s a good chance they too can survive.

Scharringhausen explains: “Not everything will die. If we think about humans, the way to survive is to go underground.

“You can take it outside in the bunker if you have enough supplies to get through the winter period where you can’t grow any edible food.

“Maybe the hard-to-grow plants that humans love to grow won’t grow as well, but there are seed stocks, so if they’re protected well enough, you can restart farming.”

Plan to save Earth from asteroids

Some experts worry that Earth is not yet ready to defend itself from potentially deadly asteroids.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk ever caused concern by tweeting: “a big rock will eventually hit the Earth and we currently have no defenses.”

Nasa is looking at several defensive methods.

It recently launched its Double Asteroid Redirection Test mission.

Nasa speak: “DART is the first mission devoted to investigating and demonstrating a method of asteroid deflection by altering the asteroid’s motion through space through kinetic impact.”

The DART spacecraft will crash into a small asteroid called Dimorphos in September with the aim of sending it off course.

And, the US space agency is planning for a ‘golden asteroid’ The exploratory mission will launch this summer.
