Halfway through the original footage, the Sanderson sisters find themselves in a gym full of well-dressed adults partying on Halloween night. Winifred and her sisters perform an elaborate and fun musical here. The song they sing is Winifred’s own interpretation of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic “I Put a Spell on You”, with lyrics referring to what’s going on in the story.
Not only was this an opportunity for director Kenny Ortega (of the hit musical “High School”) to invite legendary stage actor Bette Midler to do his work, but it also served narrative purposes. At the end of the performance, all the adults are enchanted by her, hypnotized to dance the night away, thus making it inevitable for them to get out of her way.
This scene is so striking and memorable that in 2020, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker re-enacted the scene again virtual, in character, for New York Restoration Project. It’s part of the movie’s DNA. Not including a similar scene in the sequel would be like an action movie without a car chase.
However, it cannot simply be the same sequence repeated. It needed to be a new song that was catchy and spooky, with bigger and better choreography to really wow the audience. Let’s make it worth our time by creating something the audience is looking forward to seeing in a way that surprises them.
